Principal's Reflection

Our Lady Help of Christians – Patron Saint of Australia
24th May
Tomorrow is the Feast Day of Our Lady Help of Christian’s the Patron Saint of Australia. The Our Lady Help of Christian’s title for Mary, is a reflection on her role as a maternal figure who guides and supports the Church.
Since the Middle-Ages, the Church has devoted the month of May to Mary. Many Christians undertake pilgrimages during this month to shrines associated with the Blessed Virgin. In May, there are also three Marian feasts that are celebrated which help us to understand what Mary can teach us about being disciples.
- Memorial of Our Lady of Fatima May 13
- Our Lady Help of Christians – May 24
- the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin - May 31.
These celebrations, like all Marian feasts, are really celebrations of Jesus Christ. To rejoice in Mary is to celebrate God’s greatest creation - the vessel he fashioned to be his own mother, the woman who would bear him into the world. In the life of the “handmaid of the Lord,” we learn what it means to say “yes” to life in the Lord and to discover in him the meaning of life.
With maternal love for us, Mary wants what is best for us - she wants Jesus for us, so she urges us, “Do whatever he tells you” (John 2:5). Then she helps us as we lead others to know and love her Son too. Her feasts not only empower us to turn to her in prayer, but also to love Jesus and others with a greater love.
Mary Help of Christians, Pray for us.

Exciting news...
Is there something in the water? We have more exciting baby news at St Patrick’s. CONGRATULATIONS to Shona Creighton (Year 2 Emerald) who is expecting her first baby!
Also…. CONGRATULATIONS to Kim Dooley one of our Learning Support Assistants, who has also announced she is expecting her first baby.
Your St Patrick’s family wish you both health and happiness in the coming months and look forward to welcoming your precious bundles of joy Miss Creighton and Mrs Dooley!
Thank you Mr Foster
Sam Foster, a well known and regular visiting teacher to our school has secured a temporary full-time teaching position for the remainder of the school year at St Joseph’s Charlestown. This is an exciting opportunity for Mr Foster’s career and a testament to his dedication to self-improvement and his vocation to date. We wish Mr Foster all the very best in his position.
Mr Foster has been teaching Mr Dilley’s class while he is on leave. We welcome Mr Travis Dicks for the next two weeks teaching Year 6 Gold.
Athletics Carnival
God willing and weather permitting our Athletics Carnival will now be held on Thursday, 12 June at Turner Park, Aberdare! Details are provided further along in this newsletter.

Our Diocese has experienced severe and ongoing rainfall, leading to flooding across several of our communities. Many Local Government Areas within our Diocese have now been declared natural disaster zones.
We are grateful that our school grounds have remained safe through this challenging period. However, our thoughts are with our St Patrick’s families who may have been affected by this weather event.
We extend our deepest gratitude to the NSW State Emergency Service (SES) and all first responders for their support of communities across the region. Their courage, commitment, and selflessness in times of adversity are truly commendable.
As a school community, we stand in solidarity with those impacted and offer our support wherever it is needed.
If I can be of any assistance to your family, please don't hesitate to reach out. Ph: 4990 3152 Email: petrina.massey@mn.catholic.edu.au
God bless,
Petrina

Last Friday, our students faced disappointment when wet weather led to the cancellation of our athletics carnival. However, their spirits were soon lifted when they arrived at school to find Sergeant Glen Swift and his police motorbike in the playground!
Sergeant Swift visited our school to engage with students in celebration of Walk Safely to School Day. He handed out balloons, tattoos, and stickers, bringing smiles all around. The students even had the opportunity to sit on his police motorbike for photos.
Adding to the fun, Sergeant Swift used his speed radar gun to record the running speeds of some of our students and teachers. In an impressive feat, our very own teacher, Mr. Girvin, set the fastest time, reaching a top speed of 27 km/h!
A huge thank you to Sergeant Swift for making Walk Safely to School Day extra special for our students!

Religious Education News
From 2 to 6 June, we celebrate Catholic Schools Week—a time to honour the vibrant communities within our Catholic schools in the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle. This week highlights the dedication of staff, the growth of students, and the shared mission to nurture each child spiritually, intellectually, socially, and physically. Catholic education is about helping every student flourish and become the person God calls them to be, through learning that inspires both the heart and mind.
We have much to be proud of in our endeavours to provide our young people with a well-rounded education that meets their needs today and for their future. We are deeply grateful for our thriving community, where teachers, parents and parish come together in unparalleled levels of care providing safe, supportive and inclusive surroundings which nurture students’ wellbeing, confidence and hope for themselves.
In this Jubilee Year, we are blessed with opportunities to share the love of Jesus Christ and remind ourselves that growing in faith builds firm trust in God’s promises. It is our trust in God’s promises that fills us with hope—even in our darkest moments, God's faithfulness never fades. May this week inspire us to live each day with joyful hearts and steadfast hope in the Lord.
We pray together:
Loving God,
May the God of hope fill us with joy and peace
as together we guide and nurture the minds and hearts of the young.
May the God of hope grant us wisdom to live with truth, patience to lead with compassion, and faith to inspire with love.
May we always find strength in the mission to reflect Christ’s light in our days, and may our work bear lasting fruit in the lives of those we love and serve.
Amen.

Beanie for Brain Cancer

Brain cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in children, and adults aged under 40 in Australia, yet alarmingly very little is known about brain cancer, its causes or how it is treated.
That’s why we need your help. Every dollar helps in the fight against brain cancer. Your donation will go towards vital research to improve patient treatments and, hopefully, find a cure one day.
St Patrick’s will be hosting our annual Beanie for Brain Cancer fundraising day on Friday 13th June, 2025. Students are encouraged to wear any beanie to school, warm out of uniform clothing and bring a gold coin donation to contribute to this worthy cause.
Leading up to the day, there will also be some activities which students can participate in with a monetary donation such as a design a beanie competition and ‘jelly beanie’ guessing competition. We will inform families via Compass when these activities will be taking place.
RE in the classroom
This term Year 4 Gold have been exploring the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives. We have explored the work of the Holy Spirit present in the Church and in the world. We are learning about the role of the Holy Spirit in the sacraments, especially the Sacrament of Confirmation and Gifts of the Holy Spirit strengthened in Confirmation. Students are also investigating the symbols and rituals associated with the Sacrament of Confirmation. The students are reflecting on how the Holy Spirit strengthens them to be Christ for others and to live out the mission of Jesus. We recognise that Christians are empowered by the Holy Spirit to act like Jesus and continue Jesus’ work of witness and service. At the conclusion of this module, students will appreciate the role of the Holy Spirit in guiding and shaping human activity in the Church and in our world.

NAIDOC Week
On the Tuesday 1st July, 2025 our school will be holding our annual NAIDOC celebration.
NAIDOC is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their histories, cultures, achievements and continuing contributions to our country.
Our school celebration will begin with a smoking ceremony (Uncle Warren), followed by a liturgy and some engaging rotational cultural activities including dance (Mount View High Students), Aboriginal art, games and storytelling.
We are reaching out to our school and parish community to assist in facilitating some of these proposed activities. If you or someone you know within the community has cultural skills in these areas and would like to facilitate a group on this day, please contact Mrs Kennedy.
We are warmly inviting families to engage and support students in the activities on the day.

Year 3
Year 3 have been busy with persuasive writing in English. In Maths, we have been generating multiplicative patterns and modelling, describing, and continuing number patterns. During Religion lessons, we are learning to recognise and describe the Hebrew scriptures. We have also been very busy creating Monet-inspired artworks.

Year 4
Dear Families,
We’re almost halfway through the year, and what a wonderful journey it has been in Year 4! It has been a pleasure watching our students grow academically, socially, and emotionally. Here’s a snapshot of what we’ve been up to—and what’s coming next!
English
Our students have explored the mentor concept of argument and authority alongside the supporting concept of genre, through a deep analysis of the text Ned Kelly and the Green Sash. They’ve investigated the difference between authority and authorship, while developing a deeper understanding of rhetorical devices used to strengthen arguments and persuade an audience.
Students have applied this knowledge when crafting written responses and persuasive texts. Guided reading continues to support individual needs, and we’ve thoroughly enjoyed diving into rich literature together.
Mathematics
We’ve focused on developing number sense, including multiplication and division strategies, as well as problem-solving. Students are gaining confidence in using both mental and written strategies and have enjoyed engaging with hands-on materials to deepen their understanding of key mathematical concepts.A major focus has been on multiplicative thinking, which involves the flexible use of multiplication and division concepts, strategies, and representations. This foundation supports deeper reasoning and prepares students for more complex problem-solving tasks.
Social & Emotional Learning (PB4L)
This semester, we’ve focused on building resilience, kindness, and respect. Students are learning how to manage their emotions, set personal goals, and work effectively in teams. Our classroom community continues to grow stronger each term, and we are incredibly proud of how students are learning to support one another.
🗓️ Looking Ahead –
- Wellbeing: We’ll continue to nurture a growth mindset and help all learners build confidence and self-belief.
🎉 A Note of Celebration
Each student has shown incredible effort and growth this semester. It’s been a joy to see their personalities shine and their learning flourish. Thank you for your ongoing support at home—from helping with homework to encouraging a love of learning.
💬 Stay Connected
If you have any questions or would like to discuss your child’s progress, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We truly value our partnership with families and are committed to supporting every student on their learning journey.
Year 5 - Emerald
Year 5 - Gold
It has been a busy start to the term with some exciting news for our Year 5 Gold students. We would like to congratulate Willow whose trio performance achieved first place in the State Championships finals for dance at the Shine Bright Dance event last month. Congratulations also to our talented sportsmen and women who have been selected in the following representative teams: Parkar – touch football and rugby league, Hugo – cricket and soccer, Harry – soccer, Matilda and Estella – netball and Austin – first year of bull-riding in local rodeos.
We participated in our school’s Holy Week prayer stations and enjoyed the prayerful and engaging activities prepared by Mrs Greenup. Mrs Kennedy has been helping us to create some phenomenal artworks in Aboriginal lessons. We also had a ball at the annual Easter egg raffle where many of the students scored some yummy prizes. You can see some photos of these events below. We would also like to welcome a new student, Sonny, to our class. We are all looking forward to another exciting term together and can’t wait to share some of our learning experiences and school events with you.

Year 6
Term 2 has been busy with lots of interesting learning so far.
Year 6 students have enjoyed finishing off the Easter week celebrations and learning about the life and death of Pope Francis and the process that now follows. We have also been reading about and following the upcoming Canonization of Carlo Acutis, the first millennial saint. This is an incredible story of a 15 year old boy who died in 2006 at the age of 15. Students have been learning about the steps involved to become a saint. This is a story that we look forward to following in the near future, once our new Pope is elected.
They have also been busy producing their very last Mother’s Day artwork as a student of St Patrick’s. They have put much love, time and creativity into it.
Aboriginal Education
Students in Year 2 have created an Aboriginal shell midden

Library News
Year 6 in the Library
Year 6 students were introduced to pangrams in their library lesson in Week Three. A pangram is a sentence that contains every letter of the alphabet. The most famous pangram is: The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. Check if you don't believe it contains all the letters of the alphabet.
The challenge for Year 6 was to compose a pangram of their own that was fewer than 15 words long, not a variation of the above pangram, and had to make grammatical sense. Check their efforts below. One girl, who was very creative, googled the town with the longest name in the world. It had a lot of letters.
The following pangrams almost made it:
Skibidi Toilet has a jacuzzi, with gluggy water and plays red xylophones. He’s a famous queen. (Indi B.)
Mathew and Michael McKenzie went to the snow to go sledding, then go sky diving, and then go find a camping spot; after camping Michael and I go bowling, then go golfing, then Michael goes quickly to see his fronds. (Mathew M.)
Mr. Hudeyfin likes to play Lazer tag basketball and had x-rays in Jamaica with Vinnie. (Levi H.)
A violet xylophone was dancing and singing music while zigzagging and bouncing around the house. (Gabriella E.)
A brick fell quickly down on the zebra named Xavia jumping and stomping very hard. (Arhya T.)
The following pangrams made it:
Rosie, Madison, and Havanah love playing Quidditch with a funny, brown cat zigzagged xylophone – joking. (Rosie C., Madison H., & Havanah G.)
The Quizzical vixens jump boldly over the dwarf frog's box while kissing. (Mason C.)
The beautiful white fox quickly jumped over the soft dog named Ziggy. (Lacey J.)
The graceful dancer zoomed around the large box whilst the other person juggled very quickly. (Elsie M.)
Bad antelopes all have funky horns; x-rays can see the zigzags jammed quietly like activewear. (Amity S.)
Mr. Mckenzie plays with his friends, Skibidi toilet, Xavier, Uncle Garry, Jimbob and Mrs. Quan. (Jackson L.)
One late haiku from Arhya Tietie :
Pretty pink princess
She lives in a castle now
And has many friends
Premier's Reading Challenge
Congratulations to the following students who have uploaded their books to the Premier's Reading Challenge website and have reached their upload target. These students are Jaxson from Kindergarten, Wolfgang from Year 1, Vinny from Year 2, Rocco from Year 4, and Kye from Year 6. You have all been validated and will receive your PRC certificates at the end of the year. It is a positive to see so many boys engaging with their reading. I have almost finished emailing parents with their children's updated logon details, but should have this completed this week. If any parents need help uploading books, please don't hesitate to contact me. In the meantime, happy reading.michael.mckenzie@mn.catholic.edu.au

Kindergarten In the Library
Kindergarten children have been practising how to logon to their computers in our library lessons. They are slowly getting familiar with what we call keyboard geography. It takes time, but they are making good and steady progress. Several students can now logon by themselves. Once on the home page, students then navigate their way by way of the Student Portal to World Book Online. We have a link to the website which is one of our paid subscription sites. We have now introduced them to Typing Club where the students can hone their typing skills. They have been learning about the home row, that is the keys between f & j. Did you know that f & j have little ridges on them? If you wanted to help them progress at home, the website is available here:https://www.typingclub.com/

National Simultaneous Storytime
On Wednesday, St. Patrick's participated in the National Simultaneous Storytime for 2025. This is an event when schools, pre-schools and libraries get together across Australia and New Zealand to read a book at the same time. This year the book is The Truck Cat by Deborah Frenkel and Danny Snell. We do have one copy in the library that is now available for loan. Check out the resource Mrs Durham made for the occasion, watched over by Colby and Toby from Year One. If you would like to read this with your child or listen to it, check it out at this link. Happy Reading. https://vimeo.com/1080685762/d406433e62

School TV: Gender Diversity

In today's world, many young people are exploring who they are - not just in terms of career aspirations or friendships, but also how they understand themselves, including their gender identity. For some, this journey is straightforward. For others, it can involve questioning, rethinking, or expressing gender in ways that may not align with traditional expectations.
As a parent or caregiver, it's completely natural to feel uncertain or even overwhelmed at times. You might have questions, concerns, or simply want to better understand how to respond in a way that's helpful and affirming. The important thing to know is that gender diversity is not new - but our awareness and understanding of it is growing. It means recognising that not everyone experiences gender in the same way. While many young people feel comfortable with the gender they were assigned at birth, others may experience or express their gender in ways that feel different to what's traditionally expected.
Supporting a gender-diverse child doesn't require you to be an expert - it requires you to be present, open-minded, and willing to listen. Research shows that young people who feel accepted and supported by their families have significantly better mental health outcomes, regardless of where they are in their gender journey.
